Missouri leads nation in rebuilding interstate highway system

In honor of the nation’s 250th birthday and the Interstate Highway System’s 70th year of operation, Missouri is the first state to commit to a full reconstruction of its interstate highway system. The commitment will begin with the reconstruction and expansion of Interstate 70 from St. Louis to Kansas City to three lanes in each direction. When completed in 2030, the $2.8 billion reconstruction, modernization and widening of Interstate 70 will improve highway and bridge conditions, upgrade interchanges, enhance safety and improve reliability on the state’s most critical transportation corridor, improving service for the millions of travelers, freight carriers and communities that rely on this route every year.

“Missouri’s transportation story began with the birth of the Interstate Highway System and today we’re writing its next chapter,” said Missouri Department of Transportation Director Ed Hassinger. “The Improve I-70 Program represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform one of America’s most important transportation corridors. Through unprecedented investment, innovation and partnership, we’re delivering a safer, smarter and more resilient interstate system that will serve families, businesses and communities for decades to come.”
