Rhode Island aims to eliminate its most active crash sites
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) inches closer to completion of its reconstruction of Route 146. The road is one of the most-traveled trade corridors in the state; RIDOT expects a 3% increase in trucking traffic by 2030.
However, in 2019, the road’s deterioration led to a sinkhole developing, damaging 40 cars and causing major traffic delays. Since then, RIDOT secured a $65 million USDOT INFRA Grant to fund the estimated $196 million project.
Construction of the bridge replacements, repaving and redevelopment to eliminate congestion began in 2022. The project is expected to be completed in 2026.
