West Virginia launches new water infrastructure strategy
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey announced an additional $145 million in state funding for water and wastewater infrastructure on Aug. 19, 2026. After this recent investment, West Virginia is on track to surpass $1 billion in total water utility projects. Morrisey’s announcement also marks the state’s launch of its new water strategy, “Clean, Clear Water Strategy,” which aims to accelerate project timelines and help struggling local communities.
“We are about taking action to help people,” Morrisey said. “We went into these communities, listened to the problems people are facing and now we are acting. We’re putting real resources behind fixing West Virginia’s water infrastructure and making sure that money produces results.”
To accelerate timelines, the state is transitioning projects under binding commitments to a 60-day review period, which will be tracked on a new public dashboard. Funding decisions will also prioritize communities experiencing active boil-water orders, system failures, public health risks or severe financial distress.
