Oregon’s interstate bridge replacement clears major federal hurdle
On July 1, 2026, the Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration issued an Amended Record of Decision for Oregon’s new Interstate 5 bridge, which will connect Portland and Vancouver. Project organizers released the final version of their 944-page environmental impact report in April 2026. Their recent decision represents federal agencies’ final sign-off on the document, allowing construction to begin for Oregon’s next major infrastructure project. Project officials have said they aim to lock in a contractor next year to start construction in 2028.
“Replacing the Interstate Bridge will have lasting benefits for our communities and region for decades. From improving safety and resilience for the region to creating tens of thousands of jobs and supporting local businesses, this project is key to our region’s growth,” said Oregon Governor Tina Kotek. “This milestone is proof of what Oregon and Washington can accomplish when we work together toward a shared goal. While there is still significant work ahead, I’m confident that our partnership will carry us through to a bridge that serves everyone well for generations to come.”
