MnDOT and WisDOT release design of new Blatnik Bridge
The John A. Blatnik Bridge first opened in 1096 and connects Duluth, Minn., to Superior, Wis. It is co-owned and managed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT).
As the Blatnik Bridge is nearing the end of its design life, the two agencies are moving forward with the $1.8 billion project to replace the existing structure.
On Aug. 12, 2026, the two agencies unveiled early-stage renderings of the replacement bridge. Most of the design elements remain similar to the original bridge but are modernized with a new pedestrian and bicyclist pathway.
The bridge is expected to be closed for construction starting in 2027, to achieve substantial completion in fall 2031.
“What makes the Blatnik especially meaningful is the team behind it — two states, dedicated partners, contractors, consultants and agency staff all pulling in the same direction,” said Pat Huston, MnDOT project director. “That collective commitment is what brings a project of this magnitude to life.”
