NCDOT speeds up project delivery with new approach
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is trying out a new method to speed up infrastructure construction and delivery. The department is currently working on three simultaneous bridge rehabilitation projects, with construction totaling over $100 million.
They decided to bring contractors in during the design phase, also known as a construction manager/general contractor.
NCDOT said that this decision shaved two years off the estimated bridge opening, now expected in 2030.
“There is no such thing as a zero-impact project,” said Division 3 Highway Engineer Trevor Carroll. “We’re not trying to say it’s a minimal impact. We are trying to build plans to make sure that we mitigate those impacts as much as possible.”
