MassDOT reaches milestone for $4.5 billion bridge replacement

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is moving towards the groundbreaking of its Cape Cod Bridges Program. This $4.5 billion project includes the total replacement of the 90-year-old Bourne and Sagamore bridges, along with improvements to the approach roadway network.

MassDOT announced it completed the environmental review phase and released renderings of the new project.

“Replacing the Bourne and Sagamore bridges is one of the most important infrastructure projects in Massachusetts, and completing the federal environmental review is a major step forward,” said Governor Maura Healey. “These bridges are essential for the people who live and work on Cape Cod, the businesses that depend on them and the millions of people who visit every year. We’re going to keep moving this project forward and deliver the safe, reliable bridges that Cape Cod deserves.”

Now MassDOT has begun foundation load testing for the future bridge construction.

A construction contract is expected to be awarded in 2027, with an estimated delivery date of 2031.
