DWR hits milestone in California’s water planning

The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) hosted the inaugural meeting of the Advisory Committee for the California Water Plan 2028 on May 13 and 14 in Sacramento, marking an important milestone in the implementation of Senate Bill 72 (SB 72) and ushering in a new era of statewide water planning.

For the first time, in the 2028 Water Plan, DWR will establish an interim target of 9 million acre-feet of additional water supply, storage capacity or conservation.

During the Committee’s first inaugural meeting, members were briefed on a series of key issues that will be discussed at future Advisory Committee meetings. Members will set baseline assumptions for DWR’s statewide modeling efforts, which will rely on the Water Evaluation and Adaptation Planning Model (WEAP).

The Committee also discussed project selection criteria, which will be a central topic at the next meeting. Since there are thousands of water supply projects in various state and local plans across California, members will use project selection criteria to identify which of these projects will be modeled in WEAP.
