CDOT approves funding to shift major transportation project to 2028

After extensive regional coordination and a recommendation from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Colorado Transportation Commission approved $5 million in funding to support the decision to move the I-70 Glenwood Canyon Phase 8 Project from 2027 to 2028.

According to CDOT leadership, delaying the project one full construction season will avoid overlapping major construction in Glenwood Canyon with the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport Modernization project, which requires a full closure from April 4 to Nov. 19, 2027. Deferring the Glenwood Canyon project would maintain traffic flow and both the regional and statewide economy.

“When managing complex infrastructure corridors like I-70, strategic timing is everything,” said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew. “Deferring Phase 8 to 2028 prevents compounding disruptions along this vital highway while the regional airport is under construction, protecting traveler safety, supporting Western Slope businesses and demonstrating CDOT’s commitment to collaborative regional planning when unplanned disruptions may affect the wider region.”
