EPA supports Monterey Wildfire Infrastructure Improvement Project

The Monterey Wildfire Infrastructure Improvement Project received 84% of its funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to move the project forward.

The project entails reinforcing the Carmel Valley Clearwell Tank and the San Carlos Booster Pump Station with fire-hardening walls, replacing the roof with fire-resistant materials, installing an emergency generator and removing brush and vegetation. Both of these critical infrastructure structures remain in high-fire-risk areas.

The Monterey Wildfire Infrastructure Improvement Project is estimated to cost about $1,027,816, with  $864,500 of funding coming from the EPA.

“This investment will help us strengthen critical water infrastructure without placing the full cost on local customers,” said Spencer Vartanian, Director of Operations, California American Water. “With the Timber Fire still impacting Monterey County, the need to protect water service and firefighting capacity has never been more immediate. These improvements are a practical, affordable step toward keeping our communities safer and more resilient.”
