The Need for Building Hurricane Resilience
The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions urges the need for decision makers to be informed and ready for disaster planning as volatile storms are only more common. Hurricanes and tropical storms have both immediate and long term impacts on communities, without prepared strategies the effects could take decades to recover.
We saw in communities further inland are receiving impact like in Asheville earlier this year in the wake of Hurricane Helene. It is best that before a storm leaders invest in in both physical and policy strategies that build resilience. Looking at other communities gives insight on what their leaders prioritize and what strategies help them prepare. This includes investments in grid infrastructure, natural systems to help mitigate flood impacts, consolidated response authority and water planning.
