Nation’s largest irrigation district announces support of Delta Conveyance Project fast-track

Plans for modernizing the California State Water Project received support from the Imperial Irrigation District, the country’s largest irrigation district. While the Imperial Irrigation District will receive no water from the State Water Project, the plans will aid more Californians. Governor Gavin Newsom made a proposal to advance the plans for the Delta Conveyance Project in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

Operated by the state’s Department of Water Resources, the State Water Project provides water to 27 million people. Investment in water infrastructure ensures reliable access to clean water is maintained for drought-stricken California. The Delta Conveyance Project will aid in preventing water shortages, as well as maintaining water supply quality.

Governor Newsom’s goals for the project involved securing funding from water agencies throughout the state. Receiving support from the biggest irrigation district in the nation is a huge step towards lessening burden on infrastructure improvements. Demonstrating the importance of the project, the proposal to streamline its timeline is a commitment to an enduring California water supply.
