What to know about the partial government shutdown
At midnight Friday Jan. 30, 2026, the federal government entered a partial shutdown after failing to pass a continuing resolution to fund certain federal operations. This affects funding of the Pentagon and agencies including the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Emergency Management Agency. It is to be noted that this partial government shutdown is not likely to last as long as the record-breaking 43 day shutdown in the fall. Essential services like nutrition assistance programs will not be affected, yet the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics January Jobs report is already delayed.
A markup on the Senate-passed funding package is planned to be reviewed on Monday at 4pm. This is the first step for funding to receive full vote on the House floor.
“We’ll have a lot of conversations to have with individual Republican members over the next 24 hours or so,” said House Speaker Johnson. “We’ll get all this done by Tuesday, I’m convinced.”
“We have only a few days to deliver real progress for the American people, the eyes of the nation are watching,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
