The Bureau of Reclamation invests millions in water reuse in the Colorado River Basin

Water reuse projects in western states are in the process of being finalized as a part of The Bureau of Reclamation’s commitment to local and reliable sources of drinking water. The investment of the Colorado River Basin, which serves over 40 million people, is expected to address drought concerns and create additional water for use through nearly $200 million in water reuse projects in Arizona and Utah to support long-term sustainability. A $179 million agreement with the City of Phoenix will fund the design and construction of a new water purification facility to treat 8 million gallons per day for direct reuse. An additional $20.6 million will support a regional water reuse system in southwestern Utah, with more funding opportunities for large-scale recycling projects expected soon.

According to the Bureau of Reclamation, “Increased water recycling, reuse and conservation is necessary to address long-term drought in the Colorado River Basin and these partnerships with Arizona and Utah do just that,” Acting Assistant Secretary for Water and Science Scott Cameron said.
