New Harbor Bridge Sets Engineering Records

After a long-awaited nine years of construction, the new U.S. 181 Harbor Bridge Replacement, in Corpus Christi, Texas, opened to traffic in June. The new Harbor Bridge was needed to replace the aging 1959 steel through-arch bridge, which had been facing extreme maintenance demands due to the harsh marine environment, rising regional mobility needs and limited navigational clearance over the expanding Corpus Christi Ship Channel.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) planned to improve safety, expand capacity, enhance multimodal connectivity and increase the vertical navigational clearance from 138 to 205 feet.

“The project also sought to deliver a long-lasting, resilient, and sustainable structure capable of serving the region for up to 170 years,” said Lynn Allison, Harbor Bridge Project and Public Information Manager.

The U.S. 181 Harbor Bridge Replacement in Corpus Christi, Texas, won our Bridge of the Year Award in American Infrastructure Magazine. Read the full story here.
