Kansas City Builds for the Next Century

The new John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil Memorial Bridge in Kansas City replaces the outdated 1956 structure with a modern design that improves safety, efficiency and community connectivity. The $257 million project, completed on time and on budget in December 2024, was developed with extensive public input and coordination among MoDOT, city leaders, federal agencies and local organizations. The new bridge spans the Missouri River, linking downtown with the Northland and adding long-needed pedestrian and cyclist access alongside direct interstate connections that reduce commute times. Environmental safeguards were carefully planned during demolition to minimize impact on the river, highlighting the project’s commitment to sustainability.

Beyond its functional improvements, the bridge was designed to reflect community identity and honor its namesake, baseball legend Buck O’Neil. Residents helped shape the project’s aesthetic features, including decorative lighting, scenic overlooks and a 4,000-square-foot mural celebrating O’Neil’s legacy. The ribbon-cutting ceremony underscored the cultural significance, featuring live music, local sports mascots and historical displays. Recognized with multiple infrastructure awards, the bridge has become both a symbol of modern progress and a tribute to Kansas City’s heritage, while MoDOT continues to build on this momentum with future projects like the Improve I-70 KC initiative.
