Energy Department Advances Investments in AI for Science

The U.S. Department of Energy announced more than $320 million in new investments to significantly expand artificial intelligence capabilities under its Genesis Mission, aiming to boost the speed and impact of scientific discovery. The funding will support the creation of an integrated American Science and Security Platform designed to improve how research data, AI models and computing resources are developed and shared, with the long-term goal of dramatically increasing the productivity of U.S. science and engineering efforts while reinforcing energy leadership and national security.

The investment is focused on four major areas: building the American Science Cloud to host and distribute AI-ready scientific data and models; launching the Transformational AI Models Consortium to develop advanced, self-improving AI systems for science and energy applications; advancing robotics and automation to modernize laboratories and large-scale experiments and supporting foundational AI projects that strengthen data quality, model reliability and scientific validation. Together, these initiatives are intended to enable researchers to extract insights from massive datasets, automate experiments and accelerate solutions to some of the nation’s most complex scientific challenges.
