APWA spotlights public works in action

After the recent winter storms and extreme weather across the U.S., the American Public Works Association (APWA) celebrates the critical and collected action of officials. Public works officials and teams are on the frontlines preparing and protecting their communities during inclement weather. The APWA highlights a few stories of incredible and dedicated work across the U.S.

One snowplow driver Matte McGarry in Massachusetts was plowing roads when he noticed an unusual sight. “It looked fake — it didn’t seem real when I saw it at first,” McGarry told Boston 25. “I was doing my route, probably my third time around, when I was turning around and saw legs sticking out of the snow, pretty much just flailing.” The man was walking home after watching a football game and was trapped in the snow. McGarry is credited with saving the man’s life after pulling over and rushing to help. This is just one story of the everyday heroics of public works personnel.

“We thank each and every one of you who has answered the call over the past few weeks,” wrote the APWA in the post. “We know the hours are long and the conditions are difficult, but we applaud how deeply the roots of your service run.”
