Louisiana’s infrastructure graded at ‘C-’

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) released the 2025 Report Card for Louisiana’s infrastructure. This grading system looks at ten categories of infrastructure both individually and cumulatively. For Louisiana, their grade is an improvement from their last evaluation in 2017, which received a ‘D+’. However it is still slightly below the national grade of a ‘C’.

In the report cards, grading of aviation and solid waste received a ‘C+’. Following came dams and levees with a ‘C’. Coastal areas improved in their grading despite significant storms hitting the state and its grade rises to a ‘C-‘. Trailing behind is Louisiana’s bridges, ports and wastewater with a ‘D+’. With the lowest grade of a ‘D’ is drinking water and roads.

The report offers tips to improve  Louisiana’s infrastructure. ASCE calls for the state to invest more funding in infrastructure, to increase collaboration across agencies and municipalities and to invest in modern data management systems.

“We’ve endured our fair share of challenging events in Louisiana, but our communities have always come back stronger,” said Katherine Castille, P.E., ASCE Louisiana Section President. “The people of Louisiana require infrastructure networks that are as resilient as the people they serve, to keep families safe and businesses operational. The improved grade in this report demonstrates the hard work our public and private sectors have done to modernize our built environment, but we know Louisiana is capable of far better than a ‘C-’ when provided additional resources and a dedicated workforce.”
