Infrastructure Project of the Week: Gordie Howe International Bridge Nears Completion

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, a significant infrastructure endeavor connecting Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, is approaching its anticipated opening in fall 2025. Spanning 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers), this six-lane cable-stayed bridge will feature the longest main span in North America at 853 meters (2,800 feet) and includes a dedicated multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists. The project encompasses new ports of entry, inspection facilities, and improvements to local roadways, directly linking Interstate 75 in the U.S. with Highway 401 in Canada.

Construction, which began in 2018, has progressed steadily despite challenges, including delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic. As of spring 2025, key components such as bridge towers, road deck installation, and port of entry facilities are nearing completion. The bridge is expected to enhance cross-border trade efficiency, alleviate congestion at existing crossings, and provide a modern, reliable link for both commercial and personal travel between the two nations.
