DOE announces the Speed to Power initiative
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announces the Speed to Power initiative with an aim to increase the productivity of large-scale grid infrastructure projects. The initiative also continues efforts to provide affordable, reliable and secure energy. The DOE issued a Request for Information focused on attracting large-scale grid infrastructure projects that can accelerate the United States speed to power.
In this they reflect specific projects that they are seeking including projects that:
- Enable a minimum incremental load of 3 gigawatt (GW).
- Support up to 20 GW of incremental load.
- Include, but are not limited to:
o New inter-regional transmission to support incremental load serving capability (must be
at least 1,000 MVA);
o Reconductoring of existing lines to support incremental load serving capability (must be
at least 500 MVA);
o Bringing retired thermal generation facilities back into service or otherwise using the
existing interconnection capacity to provide reliable power generation; and
o Construction of new generation or portfolios of new generation assets.
- Include, but are not limited to:
“With the Speed to Power initiative, we’re leveraging the expertise of the private sector to harness all forms of energy that are affordable, reliable and secure to ensure the United States is able to win the AI race.”said Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
