ASCE releases statement on IIJA expiration
The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) was a major bipartisan investment that provided $1.2 trillion in federal support for infrastructure projects, signed into law in 2021.
The IIJA expired on Sept. 30, 2026. Despite passing the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, many popular programs are likely to face cuts in 2027.
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) estimated that the IIJA funded over 72,000 infrastructure projects. In its 2025 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure, the society gave the program the highest grade in its history, largely due to progress on IIJA projects.
“ASCE estimates the United States still faces a $3.7 trillion infrastructure investment gap through 2033 and millions of Americans continue to rely on aging systems that are increasingly vulnerable to extreme weather, population growth and rising demands,” said Marsha Anderson Bomar, Ph.D., ASCE President. “Many of the largest projects funded through IIJA are still under construction, meaning some of the legislation’s most significant benefits have yet to be fully realized. Abandoning this momentum now would risk reversing years of progress and increasing costs for future generations. When America invests in infrastructure, America benefits.”
