USDOT Responds to State Opposition Over Electric Vehicle Charging Program Review
The U.S. Department of Transportation has responded to a coalition of 16 states and the District of Columbia that are opposing a federal review of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program. The review, announced in February 2025, temporarily pauses new obligations while allowing reimbursements for existing projects to continue.
The department states the goal of the review is to improve the efficiency and implementation of the program, which was designed to support a nationwide network of electric vehicle chargers. Officials cited low fund utilization rates in several states as a reason for evaluating current processes and guidance.
The review aims to ensure the program is meeting its objectives effectively and that public funds are being used as intended to advance electric vehicle infrastructure across the country. No changes to funding levels or project eligibility have been announced at this time.
