U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has launched the SAFE ROADS initiative, urging all governors to prioritize safety improvements on non-freeway arterial roads, where over half of U.S. roadway fatalities occur, especially among pedestrians. The program emphasizes data-driven safety investments, distraction-free intersections, and streamlined road design, with states required to identify and submit high-risk road segments within 60 days. The Federal Highway Administration will support the effort through technical assistance, safety audits, and help selecting effective countermeasures.
