Texas DOT works to leverage artificial intelligence’s power

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched a three-year Artificial Intelligence Strategic Plan (2025–2027) to improve roadway safety, mobility and operational efficiency across the state. The 70-page plan outlines how AI will optimize infrastructure, enhance decision-making for roadway operations and maintenance, and streamline employee tasks by automating time-consuming processes. Current projects already show promise, such as using AI to cut invoice verification times from seven days to 30 minutes, piloting real-time roadway incident detection in Austin and automating employee onboarding and offboarding with robotic process automation. TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams emphasized that AI, when applied responsibly, has the potential to transform traffic monitoring, project delivery and safety outcomes statewide.

Looking ahead, TxDOT has identified more than 230 potential AI use cases developed through focus groups with staff across its districts. These include advanced tools for automating bridge inspections, predicting pavement and material performance, optimizing traffic signal timing and analyzing pedestrian and bicycle traffic to guide future investments. By integrating drones, computer vision and predictive analytics, TxDOT aims to extend infrastructure lifespans, reduce costs and improve service for the traveling public. The plan positions TxDOT to embrace upcoming technological innovations while maintaining a strong focus on safety, efficiency and resilience in Texas’ transportation system.
