NIST Launches Centers for AI in Manufacturing Infrastructure
The National Institute of Standards and Technology is expanding its partnership with the nonprofit MITRE Corporation as part of a broader effort to strengthen U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence. NIST is investing $20 million to launch two new centers focused on applying AI to boost manufacturing productivity and protect critical infrastructure from cyber threats. The initiative is designed to speed the transition of AI technologies from research into real-world use, helping American manufacturers become more competitive while supporting national economic and security priorities.
The two centers will develop and evaluate AI-driven tools that improve production efficiency, strengthen cybersecurity and reduce risks tied to insecure or adversary-controlled AI systems. This effort aligns with national AI policy goals and builds on NIST’s history of public-private collaboration, including its work on AI standards and model evaluations. Together with future investments, such as a planned AI-focused manufacturing institute, the partnership aims to remove barriers to adoption, encourage innovation and reinforce U.S. leadership in AI and other critical technologies.
