New Wastewater Treatment Plant Opens in New Mexico

The City of Anthony, New Mexico, is set to enhance its wastewater management capabilities with a new treatment plant funded through a partnership with USDA Rural Development. As a designated colonia, Anthony qualifies for specialized grants and loans aimed at addressing the infrastructure needs of rural communities near the U.S.-Mexico border. The Anthony Water and Sanitation District, which serves around 8,000 residents, is transitioning from an aging facility built in 1980 to a modern plant that will increase its capacity from 0.9 million gallons to 1.6 million gallons per day. This upgrade is crucial for meeting regulatory standards and supporting future growth in the area.

Despite facing challenges such as rising costs during the COVID-19 pandemic, the district successfully secured additional funding to move forward with the project. The new facility will not only meet current demands but also allow for the expansion of services to unserved areas, improving public health and sanitation. With the new plant operational, the district can now conduct more frequent testing to ensure compliance with environmental standards. The superintendent, Jose Terrones, emphasized the vital role of USDA Rural Development in making this project possible, highlighting that without their support, the necessary upgrades would have been unaffordable for the community. Completion of the project is expected by November, marking a significant milestone for Anthony’s infrastructure and public health.
