Metro awarded $231 million for Southeast Gateway Line
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has secured a $231 million grant from the California State Transportation Agency’s Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program to advance the Southeast Gateway Line, a 14.5-mile light rail project connecting Southeast Los Angeles communities to the broader Metro network. The line will run from the Slauson/A Line Station in Los Angeles to Pioneer Station in Artesia, featuring nine stations and a new connection to the C Line at the I-105 Freeway. It will serve cities including Bell, Bellflower, Cerritos, Cudahy, Downey, Huntington Park, Paramount, South Gate, and Vernon.
Metro Board Chair and L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn emphasized the project’s significance for a region where nearly half the population lives below the poverty line and 18% of households lack access to a car. The Southeast Gateway Line aims to provide a reliable transit alternative for approximately 2 million residents, improving access to jobs, education, and healthcare. While the initial segment’s estimated cost exceeds $5 billion, with over $2 billion already identified, Metro continues to seek additional funding, including federal support, to complete the project.
