EPA will Help Atlantic City comply with Safe Drinking Water Act

The EPA has ordered the Atlantic City Municipal Utilities Authority to correct violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act after a 2025 investigation found improper lead and copper sampling and reporting practices. The utility must update its sampling plans, complete two full rounds of sampling in 2026 and follow required consumer notification and follow-up actions if lead levels exceed federal limits.

The enforcement action follows multiple inspections from 2022–2025 and was coordinated with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. EPA officials emphasized the agency’s responsibility to ensure safe drinking water and will continue providing technical assistance to help Atlantic City meet federal standards.
