The Solution to Urban Flooding? Cities Adopt Green Stormwater Infrastructure

As urban flooding is becoming increasingly frequent and dangerous, some cities are shifting from traditional water containment and redirection methods in favor of green stormwater infrastructure (GSI). GSI solutions include constructed wetlands, rain gardens, green roofs, porous pavement and more parks and green spaces.

The city of New Orleans is embracing this change through nonprofit GSI projects like The Sankofa Wetland Park & Nature Trail andThe Vision To Reality Stormwater Management Park. These projects, among other initiatives added 189,000 gallons of stormwater retention capacity to areas of New Orleans.

 

Other cities like New York, Philadelphia, Seattle and Raleigh started to implement green stormwater infrastructure.
