MDOT celebrates major project completion

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announces the completion of the M-72/M-22 project. This $25.8 million investment rebuilt portions of the highways in Traverse City and Elmwood Township. The project successfully completed in under a year.

The project was designed by ROWE PSC and built by Team Elmers. The scope of the project included restoring the surface condition and ride quality of the road while improving safety and accessibility for pedestrians. The team also built a roundabout at the M-72/M-22 intersection that incorporates the Bay Street intersection with an aim to increase the flow of traffic and reduces accidents.

State and local officials and partners in the project were present at the opening event. Attendees included State Transportation Director Bradley C. Wieferich, Elmwood Township Supervisor Jeff Shaw, Traverse City Mayor Amy Shamroe, TART Trails Director Julie Clark, Norte Executive Director Jill Sill, Bay Area Transportation Authority (BATA) Director of Communications and Development Eric Lingaur, Discovery Pier CEO Matt McDonough and former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.

“I know folks grumble about roundabouts, but a well-placed roundabout can reduce injury crashes by 80 percent or more,” said Buttigieg. “I want to commend MDOT, the contractors and, above all, the workers who, in partnership with this community, made sure this was a success.”
