Governor Lamont Announces Start of Bridge Replacement and Traffic Flow Improvement Project on I-95 in West Haven
Connecticut has initiated a $136.5 million infrastructure project to replace two aging Interstate 95 bridges in West Haven, aiming to enhance traffic flow and safety for the approximately 145,000 vehicles that traverse this corridor daily. The bridges, over 70 years old, span 1st Avenue and the Metro-North Railroad tracks. The project includes extending the southbound lane from Exit 44 to create a continuous travel lane to Exit 43, addressing longstanding congestion issues. Funded with 90% federal and 10% state resources, the construction is expected to be completed in phases by the end of 2027, with minimal traffic disruptions anticipated during the initial stages.

Governor Ned Lamont emphasized that the project represents a significant investment in public safety and mobility, creating approximately 100 jobs and strengthening the state’s workforce. U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal highlighted the importance of federal support, noting that over $122 million in federal funding will facilitate the replacement of the deteriorating bridges, ultimately improving commuter safety and traffic flow on I-95.
