APWA’s message on the government shutdown

The American Public Works Association (APWA) sent out a message to all members and allys on the continuing government shutdown,

“The American Public Works Association (APWA) is urging Congress and the Administration to work together to stop this government shutdown and return to work for the American people. This shutdown isn’t helping anyone. It’s threatening the delay of critical funding for emergency preparedness and response, the implementation of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), and it is undermining the essential services public works professionals provide to communities across the nation.

Public health and safety must remain the top priority. Ending this shutdown is not a partisan issue, it is a shared responsibility. We encourage all leaders to return to the table and ensure stability for the people and communities that depend on strong, reliable public works.

If you are being affected by the shutdown, please let us know.

Thank you for your continued service and dedication to keeping our communities safe, sustainable, and resilient.”

President Vic Bianes, PE and CEO Scott D. Grayson, CAE signed the letter.

The message included a link to a form for members to submit their story to the APWA Government Affairs team. This team aims to use these stories when advocating for APWA interests to members of the US House and Senate, Congressional committees, the media and the public. Some stories they are currently interested in include federal permitting, federal grants, emergency management, safe streets and water. Additionally, they ask public works first responders, how is their chapter working on first responder recognition on the local level? They also ask, what is improved and what is a struggle on federal regulations?
